Twee winnaars Porta Mosana College in Public Speaking Contest

There we are. Finally! The Public speeches of the 3rd graders are about to start. The parents are sitting proudly next to their child. The contestants are looking around nervously, waiting until they have to go forward and give their speeches. The judges are sitting at the back carefully paying attention to the contestants’ speeches.

The first contestant stepped forward and introduced himself and started his speech. When his speech was over I immediately noticed that the level of English was pretty high for a 3th year student and this also accounted for the rest of the contestants. We also had a special guest in our classroom Mr Henk Witteman. He works for Malmberg, a publisher of schoolbooks in the Netherlands, and he is here to have a look at TTO and see how it is developing in our school.

After about one hour of several speeches, serious and though questions from the parents and judges, good and funny answers of the contestants, we finally arrived to the moment that the jury had to select the nominees for the final. In the mean time there was a break where the parents and contestants could have something to drink and socialize. The contestants talked to their fellow contestants  about how good or bad their speech went. The parents talked about what parents usually talk about while having a cup of coffee.. of course!

A half hour passed and finally the nominees were announced by one of the hosts, Mr. Steve Reidy. And the nominees are…..

Frederieke Gigase
Subject speech: Parents and sport… good combination?
Buster Bernstein
Subject speech: Abstract Art, a waste of time
Maartin Muntendam
Subject speech: Why sporting is important
Daphne Sweers
Subject speech: Why creative thinking is the key to our future
Martine Wauben
Subject speech: Digital art is also art
Ralph Titahuna
Subject speech: Effect of equipment and gear on the performances of athletes

The judges, who all are native speakers, were:
Ms. C. Herman (chair)
Mr. C. Pierce
Mr. S. Dixon

After all the nominees gave their speeches it was time for the jury to decide who should be the best public speaker of the evening, so they retreated themselves to conclude who should be the winner of this contest. In the mean time the audience was being entertained by our young and very talented pianist Oscar Young. He played some pieces for us, among which a very familiar piece of the videogame character Mario. He played very well and it also was very funny to hear him start with the Mario piece.

About 30 minutes later, the jury finally came out of their room and announced who the winners were.
On the 3rd place: Daphne Sweers
On the 2nd place: Martina Wouben
And the big winner of the evening: Frederieke Gigase

Sorry guys this time girls only!
And this was the Public speaking contest of the 3rd grade. I enjoyed it a lot and also think that the rest of the visitors did. Let’s look forward to the next public speaking contests.

Supertrots reden we huiswaarts.
